Graduate Certificate in Health Education

The Graduate Certificate in Health Education is designed to provide Health Care Workers (government/private non-profit), College Graduates, Nurses, Physicians, Teachers and others with the opportunity to study the fundamental principles, concepts, and skills applied to health education and health promotion and at the graduate level. Program Description

The Graduate Certificate in Health Education is designed to enable the student to learn the fundamental principles, concepts, and skills applied to health education, health promotion, and disease prevention at the graduate level. This competency-based graduate certificate program consists of 15 credit hours of graduate-level public health courses presented using online (WebCT) technology. The competencies defined in this program are selected from competencies of the National Commission for Health Education Credentials (NCHEC) and are defined in the course syllabi. Each course must be successfully completed with a grade of B or better to be eligible for the certificate. The certificate will be presented to the student after all program requirements are successfully met and a capstone session is successfully completed. A student who wishes to pursue the Certified Health Education Specialists National Certification (CHES) may take 10 additional credit hours of recommended coursework to meet the 25 credit hours and additional competencies required to be eligible for the national certification examination.

Admission Requirements

* Undergraduate coursework taken at a foreign institution must be evaluated for U.S. institution equivalent.  Please visit International Students and Scholars website for Credential Evaluation Services.

* Any applicant who has graduated from a college or university in another country where English is not the primary language, regardless of United states residency status, must obtain a minimum score of 550 on the written, 213 on the computerized, or 79-80 on the Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). An official set of scores must be sent directly from the educational testing Service to NSU's Enrollment and Processing Service.

* The Admissions Committee of the NSU-COM MPH Program will review all applications to this program and make recommendations to the Program Director and subsequently the Dean of the College.

  3. Critically review and apply evidence-based evaluation of published medical and public health literature.
  4. Describe and discuss the organization, financing, delivery, maintenance and administration of health service programs.
  5. Outline a plan for the delivery of health services for an underserved population, taking into account the health disparities affecting the populations.
  6. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principles of strategic planning for health service programs.
  7. Evaluate a public health program or initiative, taking into account legal, economic, financing and effectiveness parameters.
  8. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of personal and professional ethics in health education.
  9. Assess the need for health education in individuals and the community.
  10. Identify factors that foster or hinder the process of health education.
  11. Identify the role of Health Education in health care from a historical to a modern perspective.
  12. Determine the needs for health promotion from obtained data
  13. Describe and discuss health promotion strategies that can be incorporated into multiple settings.

Evaluation Methods

Faculty will evaluate student performance using a variety of assessment methods (written examination, presentations, multiple choice examinations, research papers, or special assignments). Students will complete course evaluations at the end of each course. Program committees will provide oversight on the progress of the students and the program. Each student is required to take and pass a competency-based Comprehensive Examination at the end of the course of study.

Currently the approximate total cost of the 15cr certificate program is: $9,525

What are the chances of getting a job when I successfully complete the certificate program?

Students successfully completing the Graduate Certificate in Health Education would have enhanced their ability to conduct health education/health promotion for not-for-profit social/health service agencies, and similar organizations.

Students may enhance their job opportunities further by pursuing national certification (CHES – Certified Health Education Specialist).

After I complete the certificate program, will I be eligible to enter the MPH Program?

If after taking classes in the M.P.H. Program, a certificate seeking student decides to pursue the M.P.H. degree, the student must submit a new and complete application to the program to become a degree-seeking student, and must meet all the requirements for admission to the M.P.H. degree program.

Previous coursework taken as a nondegree-seeking student does not guarantee acceptance into the M.P.H. degree-seeking program, but may be transferable if performance equals or exceeds the grade of B in each course.
