Supplemental Learning and Review Sessions

Supplemental Learning
The College of Osteopathic Medicine is committed to assisting those students who may have academic difficulty. In addition to the Class Academic Advisor system, the Office for Preclinical Education coordinates Supplemental Learning. The Office for Preclinical Education serves only as a liaison and the Supplemental Learning is between the student and the student instructor. All information is kept strictly confidential and will not appear on the student’s NSU record.

How to Request Supplemental Learning
Supplemental Learning sessions are arrange between the student and the student instructor as to the time and place to meet, ideally on a regular basis. Sessions are private and one-on-one. It is the responsibility of the student to pay the student instructor directly. The cost for private session is $8 per hour. To request a student instructor, visit the Office for Preclinical Education and complete a request form. You may complete this form before visiting the Office for Preclinical Education.

How to Become A Student Instructor
The Office for Preclinical Education constantly seeks talented and interested students to serve as student instructors. Students and student instructors arrange their own time and place to meet, ideally on a regular basis. Sessions are private and one-on-one. It is the responsibility of the student to pay the student instructor directly. The cost for each session is $8 per hour. If you excelled in one of your courses and are interested in participating in a valuable learning opportunity, please visit the Office for Preclinical Education for more details.

Review Sessions

NSU-COM Student Organizations, under the leadership of the COM Student Government Association, offers students numerous resources/opportunities for review sessions and/or study guides. Below is a list of resources available to students through the NSU-COM student organizations. For additional information, please visit the COM Student Organization web site.

Undergraduate American Academy of Osteopathy (UAAO)
UAAO, with membership to the club, gives each of its members a CD compilation covering all the classes given during the first year. The disk includes files for each basic science and also includes OPP and Clinical Procedures. Within each class, charts made by students, outlines, practice exams, and review sheets are included. In addition, diagrams and a few digital pictures of anatomy/histology models are also included. All of our members find this CD very helpful!

Anatomy Review Sessions

Lamda Omicron Gamma (LOG)
LOG offers 4 Anatomy Reviews in the fall and 1 Neuroanatomy Review in the Spring. The reviews cost $25 each for non-members and are held the Wednesday evening before each exam. Students are broken into groups and rotate through 12-14 stations. Each station has an anatomy fellow that teaches their particular section to the students. The reviews are included with membership into the organization. The reviews last approximately 3 hours, sometimes a little less.

Student Osteopathic Surgical Association (SOSA)
SOSA provides all of its members a comprehensive “high-yield” anatomy packet that contains mnemonics and tables to help organize their anatomy studies. There are topics covering all sections of anatomy as well as for the neuroanatomy course. In addition to the anatomy packet, all members are eligible to attend SOSAs anatomy reviews. SOSA holds five reviews, one for each exam. They are the most comprehensive of any review on campus, with 15-18 stations each review; each station is taught by former anatomy fellows or those that honored anatomy.

Christian Medical & Dental Association (CMDA)
CMDA offers FREE anatomy reviews to all medical students before every exam. Anatomy fellows are recruited to tutor, and they provide a firm foundation on which to build your anatomical knowledge. The reviews last approximately 2 hours and are set up by stations in which a new topic is taught at each.

Histology Review

DOCARE
DOCARE offers a histology review DVD with commentary from Dr. Dribin. This DVD can be played on most computers and DVD sets. These DVDs are an excellent resource for studying practical exams. Cost is determined by the council of that year, DOCARE members get a discount. DVDs are ordered during club week and received within the following week or two. Overall a VERY good investment.
