Learning Strategies
The following links provide information on study and learning strategies
that can assist in improving these skills and maximize your academic
success. Students learn differently and you will need to review and devise
a successful strategy that is appropriate for you. An academic
class advisor will
be able to assist you in developing a strategy.
Learning and Study Strategies
Inventory (LASSI)
The Learning and Study Skills Inventory is a quick, 80-ite m survey that assesses your study habits. It will provide you with a chart of your strengths and weaknesses, compared to other college students, in ten different areas. It will also provide suggestions about areas where you can improve your skills and strategies.
To take this survey, follow these steps:
- Contact the Office for Student and Administrative Services to get a username and password
- Go to http://www.hhpubco.com/LASSI/
- Enter the school number, username and password and follow the instructions carefully. The inventory will take 10-20 minutes to complete.
- After you submit your inventory, your scores will be calculated. You may print them for your convenience.
Make an appointment with an Academic Advisor to discuss the meanings of your scores and what you can do to improve in weaker areas.

Managing Your Time
Many students discover that they need to manage their time better with
the heavy workload of the health profession curriculum. These pages provide
you with tips for managing your time well so you can get succeed. The
following are two important points in being successful at time management:
- Self Knowledge and Goals: In order to manage your
time successfully, having an awareness of what your goals are will
assist you in prioritizing your activities.
- Developing and maintaining a personal, flexible schedule: Time
management provides you with the opportunity to create a schedule that
works for you, not for others. This personal attention gives you the
flexibility to include the things that are most important to you.

Studying Techniques
Health profession curriculum requires a higher level of learning and
memorization is not the single technique that needs to be successful.
A student must be able to take learned facts and understand concepts.

Managing Stress/Anxiety
Stress is a combination of physiological and emotional responses to
an event. Some of the physiological responses may include:
- Increased heart rate and blood pressure
- Sweating
- Dry Mouth
- Tight Muscles
- Headaches
Some of the cognitive or emotional responses include:
- Negative Self-Talk
- Restlessness
- Inability to concentrate
It is not uncommon for students to experience stress and anxiety in
college. A positive attitude, a balanced approach and relaxation exercise
are just some of the ways students can combat stress. The following handouts
provide information on stress and tips on how to reduce stress in your
life:
Sometimes stress can grow into a more serious problem. NSU
Student Counseling Services provides one-on-one
counseling and students are encouraged to make an appointment regardless
of the level of stress to help cope with their personal and professional
stress in their life.
