Impaired Student Advocacy Program

All students enrolled in NSU-COM are encouraged to voluntarily seek assistance for substance abuse, dependence or addiction related issues.

The objective of the Impaired Student Advocacy Program (ISAP) is to encourage students with substance abuse, dependence or addiction related issues to seek assistance in order: (1) to protect public welfare; (2) to confidentially provide students with assistance necessary to enter into recovery and maintain physical, psychological and academic success within NSU-COM; and (3) to advocate on behalf of students as a non-disciplinary body.

The ISAP shall provide confidential assistance for students voluntarily seeking, or, if they are identified as in need of assistance with substance abuse, dependence or addiction related issues. Related disciplinary matters referred by the Student Progress Committee shall also fall under the umbrella of the ISAP. The ISAP was designed with the intent to enable all impaired students within NSU-COM to enter into a state of abstinence, whereby they may successfully return to all aspects of life.

Impaired Student Advocacy Program Protocol:

An impaired student is encouraged to enter the ISAP by contacting the ISAP Coordinator, Mr. Raymond Ferraro III, JD, fraymond@nsu.nova.edu, 954-262-1479 or, by contacting NSU Student Counseling Services at 954-262-7050.

Upon contact, the ISAP Coordinator shall take reasonable action to rapidly schedule a personal, confidential meeting with the student seeking assistance. The ISAP Coordinator shall take reasonable action to rapidly refer the student seeking assistance to A State of Mind Wellness and Counseling Center. A State of Mind Wellness and Counseling Center shall take all appropriate action to rapidly access and initiate an individualized treatment plan for the impaired student.

The impaired student shall sign a written waiver of confidentiality and medical release with A State of Mind Wellness and Counseling Center between the student, NSU-COM, and, the ISAP Coordinator. A State of Mind Wellness and Counseling Center (or, other designated treatment agency) shall notify NSU-COM only in instances where the student is found to be non-compliant and/or not amenable to treatment. This contact shall be done in a confidential manner through the ISAP Coordinator.

Student’s referred by the Student Progress Committee, resulting from disciplinary action shall sign a written waiver of confidentiality and medical release of information with A State of Mind Wellness and Counseling Center (or, other designated treatment agency) in order that they may be monitored for compliance. The ISAP Coordinator shall act as a confidential monitor and liaison between the student, A State of Mind Wellness and Counseling Center (or, other designated treatment agency) and NSU-COM.

Any student in the ISAP may contact the ISAP coordinator should they have any questions, comments or concerns, regarding their treatment and care.
