Health Education Academic Learning Skills Program
The HEALS Program is designed to provide academic support for those
students who are having academic difficulty. Students in the HEALS Program
are required to take the Learning & Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI)
to better assess learning and study skills. Based on the outcomes of
the LASSI, an academic class advisor and the student devise a corrective
plan of action through guidance, mentorship, and encouragement. Students
remain in the HEALS Program until they demonstrate their ability to perform
at or above standards on examinations.
The following is an overview of the HEALS Program:
- Students who are not satisfied with their academic performance and
would like to asses their learning & study strategies by taking
the LASSI may contact one of the academic class advisors for additional
information. The student will be given access to take the LASSI and
be given guidance on other learning skill strategies.
- Students who are having academic difficulty and have performed below
standards on examinations will be assigned an academic class advisor
and be required to participate in the HEALS Program.
- Students in the HEALS Program will be required to take the LASSI.
The assigned academic class advisor will review the results of the
LASSI and recommend learning and study strategies to assist the student.
Pertinent learning skill resources will also be referred to the student.
- Students in the HEALS Program will remain in the HEALS Program until
they demonstrate their ability to perform at or above standards on
examinations. Students are closely monitored and meet with the assigned
academic class advisor throughout the program.
- Once a student demonstrates the ability to perform at or above the
standards on examinations, the student may elect to continue in the
program if he or she desires.
