Conference Overview

"Physicians are well versed and trained in the science of medicine, but the interaction of medicine with the legal community is often viewed with contempt and a lack of understanding." - Natasha Bray, D.O.

This forum will provide physicians with a summary of the legal process associated with board actions, malpractice lawsuits – from the board action letter to the malpractice letter. Physicians will learn how to handle oneself in the deposition process and in the courtroom. Attending this forum will help remove some of the mystery and uncertainty physicians may have concerning the legal system.

Target Audience

College of Osteopathic Medicine faculty physicians, local community physicians, Broward County osteopathic physicians and CEME faculty physicians, family physicians, internists, surgeons, and physicians from any medical specialty.

Objectives
  • Describe the legal components of the subpoena and deposition process.
  • Describe the different types and purposes of subpoenas that may be served.
  • Discuss the liability of residents and attending physicians in cases resulting in medical malpractice
  • Address the liability of physicians in cases resulting in medical malpractice.
  • Describe the state and federal laws regarding state license sure of physicians.
