The Medical Center is a modern, 413-bed tertiary care facility that provides a full range of diagnostic and treatment services. Over its 150 year history, The Medical Center has emerged as a leading provider of medical care in the West Central Georgia region surrounding Columbus. The Medical Center is operated as part of the Columbus Regional Healthcare System. Because of its affiliation, many healthcare resources are available to rural areas surrounding Columbus. In addition to The Medical Center, the Regional system is comprised of several primary not-for-profit community service corporations that include ambulatory care facilities, a foundation and two nursing homes adjacent to the campus. As the only training programs, our Family Medicine residents and interns receive tremendous hands-on experiences. The internship programs have been AOA approved since 1994. Our Family Medicine residency program is seeking three year AOA approval for the class beginning July, 2006.
Through the opportunities created by a diverse regional healthcare system, The Medical Center has developed into one of the best equipped, staffed and administered hospitals in the Southeast. Many services are offered here that are provided nowhere else in the region:
- Regional trauma center, perinatal center and high risk nursery for a 13-county area
- Largest regional provider of intensive care, with separate medical and surgical intensive care units totaling 32 ICU beds

Founded in 1828, the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta is the health sciences university of the University System of Georgia. The School of Medicine is among the oldest existing medical schools in the United States. MCG has nearly 2,000 students in five schools: medicine, dentistry, graduate studies, allied health sciences and nursing, as well as about 400 residents and fellows in medicine and dentistry and nearly 90 postdoctoral fellows.
A vital source of MCG's program is the 520 bed Medical College of Georgia Hospital, the MCG Children's Medical Center and over 80 clinics. MCG Hospital and Clinics is the major referral center for the state; patients come to Augusta from throughout Georgia, every other state and numerous foreign countries because of MCG's rising reputation for the care of complex and difficult diseases. The 220,000-square-foot, 96-bed Children's Medical Center, contiguous with MCG Hospital, provides a full range of services to children and adolescents.
