Area Health Education Center
Since 1985, the AHEC Program at NSU has played a key role in bringing the expertise and resources of the health science training institutions to address health professional education and training needs in underserved rural and inner-city communities. Throughout its 19 county service area, from northern Dade County to Orlando, AHEC is actively implementing programs designed to:
- recruit students from these communities into health professions training programs in colleges and universities.
- train health professions students in various primary care sites throughout the region in order to provide exposure to the health care needs of these communities as well as the challenges and opportunities for professional practice in the region.
- provide continuing education offerings, library/informational resources and other means of assisting isolated practitioners to stay current in their fields.
- develop regionalized educational programs and initiatives in priority primary care and public health areas such as HIV/AIDS, immigrant and minority health, domestic violence and child abuse.
The NSUCOM AHEC Program is able to accomplish its mission through the multi-faceted activities of its affiliated community-based Centers: the Everglades AHEC, located in West Palm Beach and serving Broward, Palm Beach, Hendry, Collier, Lee, Martin, St. Lucie, Glades, Indian River, and Okeechobee Counties; and the Central Florida AHEC, located in Apopka and serving Orange, Seminole, Sumter, Lake, Highlands, Osceola, Hardee, Brevard, and Polk Counties. These Centers work with numerous academic centers and providers from county health departments, community and migrant health centers, rural hospital and many other primary care ambulatory and indigent sites to ensure the provision of high quality health care for the residents in their service areas.
